Supple
His gaze is directed somwhere into space. He is earnest, critical, pensive. Reflected in a lake you can see the hazy forms of trees. A picture only, a cover, but it says a considerable amount about the rendition behind it. Amir Katz plays Frédéric Chopin’s Nocturnes as though he had gone beyond this world, as though he had conquered them philosophically. No strife here, no clamour. Everything flows, all is the tonal expression of thought, with an enormous feeling for suppleness. Not every piece holds up to this assiduous floating above it all. But the stance Katz takes is a remarkably consistent one. Whoever gives himself over to it will find the recording has a tremendous amount to yield.
